FarmDirom Tom Name Ripon Farm Services are proud suppliers to Tom Dirom 12 Aug/Sep 2016 www.farmers-mart.co.uk Tom went for the John Deere Hillmaster because of its all-round performance on both monitoring yields and its day-to-day versatility in the field. “I’m always checking grain samples and yields. I went for it because it means we’re also on top of the game on the banks. It keeps itself level, altering to the contours all of the time, but its GPS and mapping systems are superb. I’ve just bought a 400hp Valtra tractor that has a TopCon RTK system and that is bang on straight every time. I’ll change my Hillmaster for a larger version next year as this one will be three years old and I like to keep machines new and fresh. The other combine is owned by Rob Park, it’s his and his father’s farm where my farm machinery fleet is kept. “There isn’t one operation of agricultural contracting that we cannot provide and if we find ourselves stretched at any time on the number of tractors we need in addition to the dozen we have, then we will hire in from Bryan Hoggarth in Kendal.” Tom comes from a farming family in Wetherall near Carlisle but left home at 16 to work for a Cumbria-based agricultural contractor. He’s now based at Pool-in-Wharfedale. “I didn’t bother with college and I’ve never been on a machinery course. I’d not even driven a combine until three years ago. I’m completely self-taught and have watched closely how others work. My passion for farm machinery and doing a good job is what drives me. One day I might like to farm in my own right but I really do love contracting. I’m very hands-on so I know exactly what is happening with the business all the time and I’m very fortunate to have a good team with me and a good relationship with Rob and his father. “Contracting today is vastly different to years ago. There was a time when you may have sat around in a field for a while telling a tale and enjoying the craic but now there is hardly time to stop. Farm acreages are bigger and the game has very much moved forward. There has never been a truer phrase for our work than making hay while the sun shines!” More power to you Tom!
