families, who are connected by
marriage - and who between
them have notched up quite a
few impressive awards in the
past few years.
But for father and son
duo, John and Simon Hare
of Trees House Farm & Dent
House Farm, winning the Tye
Trophy Tyne Tees Regional
Conservation Award 2015
brought them particular
pleasure because it recognises
their outstanding environmental
achievements and reinforces
their complete commitment to
organic farming.
For Simon (41), the win was
an endorsement of his decision
to “go organic” – despite his
dad’s initial misgivings.
“There is no denying that
farming this way is not easy,”
said father-of-two Simon,
whose marriage to Stevie linked
the two families. “So I could
understand dad’s point of view,
but I was always determined to
take this route.
“Doing it this way does
present a lot of challenges
but it is much more interesting
and we are all now totally
committed to this way of life.
Our hardest task I would say is
to produce plenty of grass for
the livestock without the use of
chemicals, and also controlling
weeds. But it is working well
now and even my dad is
becoming converted after
seeing our results!”
