and birds such as redwings.
They also grow kale and
some chicory and even plant
sunflowers amongst the kale
fields to help feed the birds
and to enhance the landscape
- local people love to be able
to walk here and see this
wonderfully tended piece of
farmland/countryside.
This approach to farming is
what led to them being awarded
a regional Tye trophy by the
Yorkshire Agricultural Society
earlier this year, for achieving
commercial and environmental
synergy. Completing their
commitment to the community
and the environment is their
participation in the popular
annual “Open Farm Day”
initiative.

out regular coppicing and replanting. In later years, under
the Countryside Stewardship
scheme, most of the kilometres
of hedgerows were coppiced
and replanted. These mixed
species hedge lines are now
luxuriously dense and stand
some 12ft high. There are
three footpaths across the land
so Malcolm has generously
provided a stone bench for
the locals to sit and enjoy
the countryside, creating a
rural oasis in the middle of a
residential area.
As well as their own land,
they also use people’s
paddocks for grazing. They
only do spot spraying on these
permanent pastures so the
land naturally attracts wildlife
