chicks love to hide amongst
it! There are times, Tim says,
when you can hear the whole
field hum with the sound of
bees!
George is now 76 but he still
loves to work on the farm and
enjoy his walks. Nowadays they
sensibly use contractors to do a
lot of the heavy work although
they do have their own potato
harvester. All their potatoes are
bagged and go straight to local
markets and the wholesalers.
They used to have four tractors
but now just have a Same and a
Deutz that suffice for what they
need. Tim’s view is that they are
better off using contractors who
can more easily bear the cost
of running today’s really big,
efficient machines.
They have 220 ewes to lamb
and bought in 40 hogs with
lambs from Barnard Castle.
At lambing time in February/
March they can get all the
lambs indoors. Tim has a water
supply for them when outside
and I was amazed to learn that
in a 48 hour period they can
drink as much as 1,000 litres!
