CE Marking – A Guide to
buying Farm Buildings
It’s a date that may have passed you by in a warm haze but the 1st of
July 2014 was, for us steel building manufacturers, a watershed day.
It was the day from which all steel
portal frames have to be designed
and constructed to a standard which
achieves the “CE Mark”. If a frame
manufacturer sells a building, (and
consequently if a farmer buys the
building), which has not achieved this
Certification then they (and you) will be
breaking the Law.
If you are buying a steel-framed farm
building it is a significant investment and
you should put an appropriate amount of
effort into specifying your requirements
and ensuring that you get a building fit for
purpose. Do not assume that all “building
suppliers” will do this for you.

This certificate attests that all provisions concerning the assessment and verification
of constancy of performance described in Annex ZA of the standard
EN 1090-1:2009+A1:2011
under system 2+ are applied and that
the factory production control fulfils all the prescribed requirements set out
above.
This certificate was first issued on 23 July 2014 and will remain valid until the date of
expiry shown, provided that the test methods and/or factory production control
requirements included in the harmonised standard, used to assess the performance of
the declared characteristics, do not change, and the product, and the manufacturing
conditions in the plant are not modified significantly.
