PROPERTY AN UNUSUAL REQUEST WITH NORTH YORKSHIRE FARM SALE A superbly situated farm at Kirby Whiske, Maunby in North Yorkshire, which is currently up for sale, comes with many outstanding features, including a five bedroom farmhouse, more than 105 acres of land, various farm buildings and sporting rights. But unusually, Crabtree Farm near Thirsk, also comes with a special and rather unusual request from the present owner to any potential purchaser. On 18 October 1951, during a night exercise from Linton-on-Ouse airfield, a De Havilland Mosquito aircraft crashed on the farmland tragically killing both the pilot and his navigator. Pilot Officer J P Hart lost control when the night fighter ran into the slipstream of target aircraft during night interceptions and the plane crashed on the farmland. Chris Greensit owns Crabtree Farm. He said: “We can’t make this a condition of the sale of course, but we believe it would not be right for anyone to conduct a search or in any way disturb the area where the crash occurred, out of respect for the men who lost their lives and whose bodies were never recovered.. After the crash, the site was guarded and then filled in and grassed, and it has since only been used for stock grazing. We obviously hope any new owners will share our view, after all it is a grave.” In 1999 Mr Greensit gave permission to two aviation archaeologists to visit the site where several fragments of the aircraft were found, mainly birch plywood of which the RL 230 was made, giving it its nickname: the ‘Wooden Wonder’. The De Havilland Mosquito Mk 36 RL230 – built at the Leavesden actory - was from 264 Squadron, mostly based in the south of England but which in 1945 moved to North Yorkshire. Mr Greensit’s request is made clear in the sales brochure prepared by Robin Jessop Ltd, the agents for the sale. It is for sale by public auction (unless previously sold) on Wednesday 1 October at 7pm at The Allerton Court Hotel, Northallerton. Guide price is £950,000. www.robinjessop.co.uk Crabtree Farm Maunby, Thirsk, North Yorkshire, YO7 4EY INTRODUCTION Crabtree Farm was purchased by Mr Christopher Greensit’s father in 1950.
