FARM NEWS BACKING BRITAIN’S BIRDS AND BEES Free range egg experts doing their bit for the environment British ethical egg producer, the happy egg co, is encouraging consumers to draw their own wildflower meadow for the chance to see it come to life in their local school or community, to mark its own wildflower initiative which supports Britain’s at-risk bee population. This summer, consumers can buy limited edition “Bee Happy” packs in stores nationwide. The famous sunshine yellow packaging will carry distinctive black bee stripes plus details of how consumers can upload their drawings online to enter a competition to win a wildflower garden worth £5,000, plus a number of other daily prizes including wildflower seeds and activity packs. More details can also be found at www.beehappyegg.co.uk INCREASING BIO-DIVERSITY The initiative follows the happy egg co.’s own commitment to planting more than 80 acres of wildflower meadows across its farms, announced last year. The meadows bring health and welfare benefits to the happy egg ‘girls’, by giving them additional ground-cover to shelter under and explore, as well as providing a variety of natural feed options. A major advantage of the planting is that it adds to the biodiversity on and around the farms by increasing the number of pollen rich species, helping to attract bees and other insects. BIRDS ARE RESPONDING WELL Rob Newell, Head of Brand Marketing at the happy egg co. said: “The addition of wildflower meadows on our farms is proving successful, with our farmers telling us that the birds are responding well. “By planting meadows at our farms we’re also giving bees the chance to flourish in the right habitat as well as boosting our hens’ happiness, so it’s an initiative that benefits both the birds and the bees. We know the British bee population needs our help and we’re really pleased to be able to get consumers involved with the launch of the limited edition packs and competition.” The wildflower garden designs will be judged by the happy egg co. Producers’ Guild. “Bee Happy” packs will be available from Tesco, Co-op, Morrisons, Asda and Sainsbury’s. www.happyegg.co.uk East Yorkshire Machinery Ltd.
