NEW TRAINING ACADEMY FOR FARMER ENTREPREURS
A training academy to give aspiring farmers the entrepreneurial knowhow they need to step into a successful career is being extended to North Yorkshire, following its success in Cumbria. Fresh Start, an industry-led initiative backed by the Prince’s Countryside Fund, is opening an academy in partnership with the National Centre for the Uplands at Thirsk Auction Mart to specifically provide training for farmers pursuing a business in upland parts of the region. During 10 sessions between November and next February, those who enrol will be taught essential business skills and given the confidence to present a business plan to a bank manager or landowner. Julia Aglionby, director for the National Centre for the Uplands, compared the sessions with taking a mini-MBA based on business skills and said support for aspiring uplands farmers was vital because it is a competitive sector with tight returns.
