The Thirsk Rural Business Centre, completed in summer 2006, is situated on a 20 acre site on the outskirts of Thirsk. This ideal location gives the Mart a competitive advantage as it is just off the A19 and the A168 - a feeder road to the A1. The new Centre has parking for hundreds of vehicles and the main complex is easily accessible for any wheelchair or disabled person. The Centre was proposed not only as a new home for the auction mart, but as a centre point for rural businesses and education establishments. It does not have to rely solely on the income from animal marts, as the mart has diversified heavily into non-agricultural events such as Furniture & Antique Sales, Fur & Feather and Collective Sales, Farmers’ Markets, Car Boot Sales as well as receiving an income from a number of business and retail units. The first sale – of weekly prime stock took place in the new Auction Mart Complex on Thursday 31st August 2006. The cattle and sheep rings were packed to capacity, to see the first animals sold through the new facility. There are regular sales of Pedigree stock and a Garden Sale was recently introduced. Entries are only accepted on the Friday prior to the sale between 8am and 4pm. The main items sold in this section are Chain saws, Stihl Saws, Electric Drills and Household and Garden Tools. There is also a large range and assortment of plants, trees, shrubs and bulbs for sale, usually in excess of 200 lots. Carole Johnstone is the proprietor of the cafe and bar, assisted by the resident chef, Matty Johnson, who rustles up some welcome and mouth-watering meals and snacks. The Centre is also supported by a number of local organisations and charities who hold regular weekly and monthly meetings throughout the main auction mart complex. are generally up for auction as well as 300 to 400 lots of household and gardening items.
