LANE END FARM THREE BUSINESSES KEEP LANE END TEAM BUSY! Running Lane End Farm shop with his wife Arlene was in some ways turning the wheel full circle for farmer Martin Hare. For as a youngster in Bradford, Martin had helped his father, Thomas, who ran a meat stall in Rawson Market. Thomas himself had worked on the stall as a lad for the then owners and enjoyed the work – so when he got the chance to take it over at the age of 20, he took it, and subsequently became a well-known butcher. But when the time came to consider the future, Martin decided that being a butcher was just not for him. “I liked working on the stall but farming was much more in my line,” he smiled. “I started farming pigs and cows to supply my Dad in Rawson Market and I knew that I’d made the right choice. I loved farming – once I started, I knew it was always going to be my life.” Martin grew up at Lane End Farm and has only spent a brief time away from that home which is still his home and now the location of three very successful businesses, the Lane End Farm, Lane End Farm Shop, and Tong Feline Retreat, a cattery run by Martin’s wife, Arlene. “We recognised that this was the ideal location for the business,” he explained, “because it gave us room to grow. We started out by selling meat three days a week from a trailer van in the farm’s car park, but work quickly spread about the quality of our meat and it wasn’t long before we outgrew the ‘van. “In 2008 we managed to get planning permission to expand the site and that is when the real shop development got under way. “It was a big investment for us but looking back we wish we had done it earlier. We have gradually expanded the shop to offer a much wider range of products but everything we sell has to meet our high standards of quality. “We are genuinely a FARM shop – we have a 200 acre farm for beef and sheep. We buy our pigs fat at Otley and Thirsk m arkets and are happy with the quality.” That commitment to quality is evident looking at the suppliers Martin and Arlene use. Fruit and vegetables are supplied by local farmers, fresh bread is from Maughan’s of Mirfield, honey comes from another local business, Denholme Gate Apiary, dairy ice cream is made by Brymor in the Yorkshire Dales, using only milk from their herd of pedigree Guernsey cows. Sweets and confectionery come from Moordale Foods and Fosters Traditional Foods.
