both qualified as AI technicians which allows us to take semen and ship it to mares that can ’ t or don ’ t come to us . We can also AI to mares from other stallions as we have done for one lady who got a very good deal on a stallion that had been to the Olympics .’
Jo says Charlotte has ambitions in the eventing world :
‘ Charlotte takes eventing seriously and has a 5 year old called Reggie who she is looking to take to intermediate level if not further .’
The latest addition to the farm income has been the launch into the tourism market with Granny ’ s Cottage providing holiday accommodation .
‘ We ’ ve always known it as Granny ’ s Cottage . Originally my great granny was there when I was little . When we lost my grandad , granny moved in there . It was originally one-third of the main farmhouse . My sister Rachel lived in there until she bought a house in the village and then mum and dad had rented it out .’
‘ When the tenancy came to its end the two of us took it on as a project and we were going to start renting out to holidaymakers for Easter 2020 but Covid saw that slip to July 2020 and ever since we ’ ve been inundated with bookings .’
‘ It has three bedrooms offering sleeping accommodation for up to six . We ’ ve added an extra shower room downstairs as well as the existing bathroom upstairs and it is dog friendly . We have no issue with dogs as we have no farm livestock in the village on our side of the road .
‘ Rachel works for the Yorkshire Clothing Company and has an eye for design and soft furnishings . It has a big dining room / kitchen area and is a great place for families to come and take it over , as they do .’
Jo says the comments they have received have been fantastic .
‘ Our visitors just love it . One set of guests came for a birdwatching weekend in Bempton but found our swallows nesting in our garage just as fascinating . We show our horses to a lot of the guests and we get everybody from grandparents , mums and dads and their families .’
