for Penistone YFC . I was National YFC Champion twice and I ’ ve been in the World Style Plough-Off about a dozen times , finishing as high as fifth once . I used to plough alongside my dad in that class .’
‘ World Style was a highly competitive class at the time . I moved to the Classic class ten years ago and now plough with what was my dad ’ s match outfit of a white David Brown 880 that he bought in 1969 and a TS86 Ransome match plough that he bought in 1968 .’
‘ We are members of the Penistone , Thurlstone & District Ploughing Society . At home I plough with a Dowdeswell plough . We are not blessed with great depth of soil up at this level and the
land is not suitable for minimum till . I plough it every year sticking to the same land .
‘ Ploughing at home helps me because I always try to plough to a match standard even though it ’ s reversible I ’ m doing up here .’
Carl says there is a need for even greater younger blood coming into match ploughing .
‘ In general , it is more the Vintage class that is growing rather than Modern or World Style because there are a lot of vintage tractor enthusiasts who buy a tractor and once they ’ ve done it up look for something to do with it . That ’ s when they buy a plough and start coming , which is great . But we still need younger
