Simon was fattening Berkshires before realising he had an opportunity to supply Cross Lanes with all their pork and began breeding pigs. He now has a mix of Berkshire, Gloucester Old Spot, Tamworth and Mangalitsa sows that he puts to a Hampshire boar, once again all natural service.
‘ I now have 12 sows. They are all free range, live in pig arcs and the pigs are finished outside. They are all sold through the shop and go at around 70-80 kilos deadweight from around 7 months old. I’ ve had my Hampshire boar for five years. He won his class at the Great Yorkshire Show.’
‘ We have to buy in food for the pigs as they need more than just grass. Our feed is a mix of wheat, peas, beans and barley.’
The one area of Simon’ s farm business where he has cut back in recent times is in the lambing flock which now runs to 150 Mule ewes put to the Texel tup.
‘ My father, John, and my uncle Bert ran the farm after my grandfather Frederick
Hare came here from Ripon. It’ s still a family partnership with myself, dad, my uncle and my mother Judith. We are producing lamb for Cross Lanes with the rest sold at Darlington livestock market.’
‘ My sister Debbie manages Cross Lanes, which is totally my father-in-law Peter Coverdale and his wife Sue’ s business, but we all work very closely. My wife Stevie is the chef in the café / restaurant.’
Simon and Stevie have two children – Sophia( 10) and Charlie( 6). Simon said he doesn’ t miss his dairying days.
‘ I did a lot of milking from being in my teens until my early 40s. You were always clockwatching. This way things are a lot more flexible and easier to work around for family and life in general.’
