Generation Shepherd Competition, spon-
sored by Carrs Billington. This will offer an
opportunity to demonstrate shepherding
skills across five different areas. Those
who enter will be required to carry out
five tasks on the day; two compulsory and
three selected from a list of task options.
Open to all members of the public will
be the Stock Judging Competition, run by
Rathmell Young Farmers Club. With good
prize money to be won, this gives people
a chance to test their skills, and is being
kindly supported by local firm Dugdale
Nutrition.
Very much a family farming enterprise,
the partnership of Frankland Farms is
headed by brothers Richard and Chris
Frankland. Since they arrived at New Hall
in the late 1800s, this is the sixth generation
of the family to have farmed here. Running
up to 1000 feet above sea level, New Hall is
renowned for the calibre of its commercial
sheep.
Farming 900 acres across three holdings,
they have a flock of 1200 sheep, 120 head
of Suckler Cattle plus 350 replacement
and store cattle and they milk 220 head of
dairy cattle. Their sheep farming enterprise
focuses on producing top quality prime
lambs, from Texel cross and Mule ewes put
to Beltex rams.
During the farm tours being held
throughout the day, visitors can expect to
hear how the family manage this diverse
mixed farm, and how to grow a sheep
farming business that will be robust for
future challenges.
