Livestock £200 VOUCHER BOOST FOR SHEEP FARMER EMILY »»AN UNEXPECTED SURPRISE WAS ON the cards for young sheep farmer Emily Saunders when she found she was one of three voucher winners in NSA’s bimonthly prize draw, just weeks after signing up to become an NSA member. NSA has teamed up with FecpakG2, Cox Agri/Ritchey and JG Animal Health to give away three £200 vouchers in a free prize draw giveaway every other month in 2016. Emily is one of three winners in the second prize draw of the year and walks away with a voucher to spend with Cox Agri/Ritchey. Growing up on the outskirts of Middleborough, North Yorkshire, Emily says her interest in sheep stemmed from a young age. She grew up helping her father with his flock and, after seeing her first pet lambs sold at market, she decided to make sheep farming a business in her own right. Emily explains: “The farm runs both a Kerry Hill and Whitefaced Woodland flock, from which the lambs are sold as breeding stock. Fat Cattle Scales Alongside this we also have a handful of other sheep which are reared for meat. The breeds we keep are very hardy and can cope with living outside in reasonably bad weather.” Alongside its day-to-day running, the farm is also open to the public seven days a week. Emily says: “I feel it is important to provide people with knowledge of how we farm and also where their food comes from. We do have to plan around this a bit. For example, to make sure we have pet lambs during the school Easter holidays, lambing takes place indoors around February/March time. I also buy some pet lambs for the children who visit the farm to bottle feed.” Emily says she hopes her £200 voucher will come in useful to buy some everyday essentials, including a new shepherd’s crook after a busy lambing time. www.nationalsheep.org.uk/draw.
