“We used to collect most of
our produce at one time but
now everything is delivered in,
except potatoes off the Wolds
that we collect as part of our
van run – they’re the Marfona
variety that make for a good
general purpose chip. We have
a guy at Whitby who grows a
lot of potatoes for us. He grows
more the pub chip that has a
bit of colour. We vacuum pack
them.”
The product range continues
to evolve and grow as eating
habits have moved on.
“It’s amazing how much of
a varied choice there is today.
When we started the main
garnish would be Iceberg
lettuce and cress. Everything
has gone much more colourful
with the likes of Lollo Rosso

From 5am to midday Phil’s
life is fruit and veg - but come
the afternoon and he’s back to
being Phil the farmer.
“In addition to our 150 owned
acreage we also rent a further 15
acres and currently run a handful
of suckler cows and up to 100120 store cattle that are bought
in as young stock from either
Ruwarp or privately and are run
on to strong stores to trade back
at Ruswarp Mart. We used to
have about 50 predominantly
Aberdeen Angus X suckler cows
but being up all night watching
them calving and having to be
up at four in the morning for
the wholesale business meant
the two things didn’t go well
together, so now it’s just half a
dozen of them at most.
“I like to buy stock that has
a bit of shape. I’m not too keen
