currently expanding our rotation
to two wheats, barley, rape, two
wheats and then into a legume.
It’s quite a big rotation but I feel it
is important.
“The barley allows an
early entry into rape and also
provides straw, which is better
for pig bedding. We also grow
a bit of spring barley. We’re
currently growing Glacier winter
barley and will be planting
Planet spring barley. Our barley
acreage is 120 with the same for
rape and 100 acres of legumes.
We were growing 100 acres of
vining peas but we’ve reduced
our risk after having a poor 2014
and have taken them down to
60 acres and brought 40 acres
of spring beans in. Typically, the
vining peas went really well last
year, and the spring beans got
away for human consumption.”
Oilseed rape is all down to
one variety and this year it is
DK Exalt. Guy is also trying 25
acres of forage crops, which
is partly down to a blackgrass
problem, and he’s putting in
Italian ryegrass, forage rape and
stubble turnips in May.
