Dairy culture will be nurtured at Notts County Show

MILKING, YOGURT TASTING and butter making are some of the ways that Nottinghamshire County Show organisers are hoping to raise awareness around the dairy farming industry and encourage the public that British is best this May.
The market for British dairy is seeing some tough times with falling milk prices and rising debt for farmers across the country, but it is hoped that by celebrating and educating visitors at this year’ s show in May, it will encourage more families to support British farmers.
The National Farmers Union( NFU) will be on hand on 14 and 15 May at the Nottinghamshire County Show at Newark Showground backing farmers in industry with its Back British Farming campaign.
Alison Pratt, communications advisor at the NFU, said:“ The current situation for dairy farmers is bleak with many currently operating at a loss. If more is not done we could see many exiting the industry.
“ NFU is once again taking part in the show’ s wonderful Food Experience area and celebrating all that’ s great about British food. As well as food to taste and buy, the area features a children’ s activity marquee and special demonstrations in the food theatre with this year’ s theme being Back British dairy farming.”
NFU staff and farmers will be a main part of the show’ s Food Experience area, explaining why buyers should buy into British dairy produce. There will be milking races, butter making and the chance to find out just what a cow eats on a daily basis throughout the Food Experience.
The NFU industry body is also showcasing its Red Tractor assurance scheme with a special visit by Massey Ferguson’ s own big Red Tractor.

MORE THAN 30 exhibitors met this month to plan the future growth and continuity of the rapidly growing Midlands Machinery Show( MMS).
Travelling from as far as Coventry and the West Midlands to Newark Showground where the show is held every November, event exhibitors were welcomed by Society CEO, Adrian Johnston. Exhibitors were given the opportunity to inject their thoughts on MMS’ s progression and future direction since it launched in 2014.
Bob Sheldon, chair of the committee, said:“ We had some great feedback from exhibitors on this year’ s MMS, which we will incorporate for its future growth.
“ MMS will continue to act as a core event for the agricultural machinery and farming industry with tight focus on firms in the Midlands.
“ We pride ourselves on the intimate feel of the show and although we have plans for growth, we will ensure that the show sticks closely to its ethos and the values on which it was founded.”
Newark Showground is also celebrating a £ 1.2 million transformation of the Lady Eastwood Centre. Thanks to grant support from Nottinghamshire County Council’ s Economic Development Capital Fund and a private trust, the centre has increased in size with construction of three new meeting rooms to add to its heated, insulated 1,400 sq m( 16,000 sq ft) main exhibition hall. The hall will be used for the first time at the annual Nottinghamshire County Show on 14 and 15 May.
The show is to back a new apprentice and traineeship scheme. Geoffrey Bond( OBE), president of 133rd Nottinghamshire County Show has provided catalyst funding for the new Midlands Agricultural Engineering Apprenticeship & Traineeship Scheme.
He said:“ Jointly as a show and as a society, we felt there were not enough opportunities open to young people to follow a career in the agri-engineering and machinery industry. We are very keen to support the agricultural and machinery industry to raise the next generation of workers with the skills they need. Too often young people go to university without giving enough thought into other career opportunities.
“ The new scheme will partner with local businesses and colleges to offer students the hands on experience they need.”
The first two students of the new scheme will be announced at this year’ s Nottinghamshire County Show on 14 and 15 May.
The Midlands Machinery Show takes place on Wednesday 23 November and Thursday 24 November and is open to visitors between 8am and 5.30pm both days.
