Highlighting the risks and
how to minimise them
»»Farming is a dangerous
occupation: statistics show that,
while the farming workforce
only accounts for 1.2 percent of
the working population, farming
accounts for 20 percent of all
workplace fatalities. So any
opportunity to highlight the
risks is to be welcomed.

The recent NFU Mutual
Risk Management Services
Farm Safety Day provided
an excellent opportunity to
highlight these risks and some
of the simple steps that can be
taken to minimise them.
PERSONAL INJURIES –
THE IMPLICATIONS
While considering the
insurance implications of
personal injury claims, the main
focus was on the personal
and emotional effect such
accidents can have on the
farmer as employer, work
colleagues, family and friends
of the injured or deceased.
This was brought home to the
group with a video, produced
by the HSE, which shows an
interview with a farmer who had
a very unfortunate incident on
the farm resulting in the tragic
death of a family member.
