Our sheep operation runs to 45 Suffolk ewes; 45 Texel ewes; 40 Southdowns; and 130 crossbred ewes,” he explained. “Around 80 per cent of the lambs we produce will go through the shop and we also keep our own replacements. My wife, Fiona, works for BQP, a pig breeding company, and she has made me more aware of figures and statistics rather than just counting of heads. We are now buying performance recorded tups and it is making a difference. This year our early lambing ewes averaged 1.98 lambs whereas when we first started recording they were only doing 1.68. Not only that but 10 per cent of our lambs weighed 40kgs at just 12 weeks. You can tell things are happening because our tups are now in great demand.” The Cattle Market Malton N Yorks YO17 0JN 01653 697820 We are happy to be associated with Antony Glaves and his team TUESDAYS Weekly sale of Prime Cattle, OTM`S and Prime Sheep FRIDAYS Weekly Sale of Store Cattle & Sheep LAST FRIDAY OF EACH MONTH Sale of Rearing Calves and Weaned Stirks LAST SATURDAY OF EACH MONTH Ryedale Farmers Market, in conjunction with the live poultry market. He still has the bug today. “We still show our stock at the Great Yorkshire, Driffield, Ryedale and Thornton-le-Dale but have moved more into the pedigree show & sale world at livestock markets. It is where my real passion lies as you are competing against the best in the country - and it pushes you to get even better. James is also going to take a heifer to the Great Yorkshire Show this year for his first time. We now go as far as Stirling and Kelso in Scotland; and to Worcester with the Southdowns. We started with the just six Southdowns but have found they are so cost-effective and do a great ‘We started with just six Southdowns but have found they are so costeffective and do a great job’ job. We started showing at their national sales in Worcester five years ago and have now won the ram section four times. We won the overall national championship last year. At the Great Yorkshire we took seconds and third places in the Suffolks so we’re knocking on the door in what are huge classes.” www.farmers-mart.co.uk Apr/May 2015 59
