Chris Berry visits the Glaves
family – butchers & farmers.
»»There is plenty going on
right now in the delightful village
that is Brompton by Sawdon, just
off the Pickering-Scarborough
road. I say delightful even
more readily than I would have
done a few months ago having
recently visited Anthony Glaves’
lambing sheds. In order to get
to them we took a little back
route through the village where
its beauty really comes to the
fore with a stream, bridges and a
variety of wildlife.
The name Glaves has been
synonymous with the village for
over 40 years as this is where
Brian Glaves took over the

butchery and abattoir business,
formerly run by Colin Croft,
who Brian had worked for from
being a boy of no more than 12
years old. It was August 1972
when Brian received notification
from his employer that he was
going to sell him the business
and having had a word with his
good lady, Doreen, they took
the plunge.
I’ve written about farming
and the rural world of Yorkshire
since 1991 and Brian has always
been one of our county’s real
characters whether judging at
agricultural shows or buying
stock at markets. He is still
to be seen doing much the
same and was Driffield Show
President two years ago.
