‘People do not come to the
Yorkshire Dales to buy cheap
food,” he said. “They come to
enjoy a beautiful landscape. We
are trying to keep it that way.”
LINTON HALL FARM HISTORY
The Boothman family first
came to Linton Hall over a
century ago having farmed
elsewhere in the village for
several generations previously.
Tom’s grandfather, Thomas,
moved in and eventually
bought the hall in the 1960s
when it ran to 150 acres.
Tom’s father, James and his
brother Edgar, followed on and

father, they built up a livestock
supply business as well as the
farm.
“They would go around
livestock markets and farms in
the north of England purchasing
stock,” said Tom. “Some of
the stock would come here
and some would go direct to
whomever they had bought for.
Those were the days when a lot
of livestock transportation was
handled by train, but as farming
changed with more rules
and regulations brought in, it
became unprofitable for them
to continue.
“My father, now in his 80s,
