erection of a new farmyard
and buildings nestled into the
hillside and surrounded by
mature trees just on the edge
of the village. It is called Stony
Meadow New Laithes and the
new buildings, supplied and

and handling facilities by

Belted Galloway cattle and
winter accommodation for the
lambing flock which lambs in
two stages, firstly from February
to mid-March and then again in
early April.”

NATIVE BREEDS
Tom has a liking for native
breeds and his Belted Galloway
herd that now runs to around
40 breeding cows with two
years worth of followers was
established in conjunction with
the Limestone Country Project
run by the Yorkshire Dales
National Park. His foundation
stock came from Paul Coppen’s
Gilmonby herd in County
Durham. Clearly, he has made
the right choice, judging from
the response he has been
getting from buyers and the
current vogue for traditional
native beef.
“I was always brought up with
a few native breeds around,
such as the Galloway and
Highland,” he said. “Initially I
went for them because they
were good hardy cattle that
are pleasing on the eye.
