Yorkshire’s Guy is new
NFU horticulture &
potatoes board chair
Yorkshire vegetable grower Guy
Poskitt has been elected chairman
of the NFU national horticulture and
potatoes board.
Mr Poskitt replaces Sarah Dawson,
who has stepped down after five years as
chairman. He was named Farmers Weekly
Farmer of the Year in 2012 and produces
more than 50,000 tonnes of carrots each
year, as well as various other produce
such as pumpkins, potatoes, swedes
and parsnips. “I am looking forward to
taking on the role as chairman and with it
the many challenges facing the country’s
growers; from ensuring the industry can
adapt in a post-SAWS world to changes
that will affect us as a result of reforms to
CAP. I would like to take this opportunity
to thank Sarah Dawson for the great work
she has done on behalf of the industry
in her five years as chairman,” said Mr
Poskitt.
Mrs Dawson said: “I leave the Board and
the NFU Horticulture and Potato team in a
strong position and would like to wish the
newly elected chairman every success.”
Kendall is new President of WFO
Former NFU President
Peter Kendall has been
named the new President
of the World Farmers
Organisation.
Mr Kendall was elected during
the final session of the WFO
General Assembly in Buenos
Aries, Argentina, and succeeds
the American, Robert Carlson.
The WFO is made up of
more than 50 national farmers’
organisations and agricultural
co-operatives and was formed
to improve the livelihoods of
farmers and the viability of
rural communities as well as
ensuring coherence with other
agriculture related activities,
such as forestry, aquaculture,
the environment, trade,
research and education.
NFU President Meurig
Raymond, who has been
attending the five-day
conference, said: “I would like
to congratulate Peter on his
election as President of the
WFO. Over the past eight
years he did an outstanding
job for the NFU in promoting
British agriculture, not just
at home, but to a worldwide
audience.
‘effort and
enthusiasm’
“I know that in this role he
will show the same effort and
enthusiasm to help develop key
agricultural policies, including
food security, climate change
and trade.”
SINGING IN THE RAIN....
Keeping both the atrocious
wind and rain at bay was
also a whole lot easier for
me with the new Fulton Storm
Shield umbrella from The Umbrella
Shop (www.theumbrellashop.co.uk)
Conventional brollies are often more
trouble than they are worth in wind
and rain, but this is certainly a big
improvement.
The Fulton Storm Shield is a large,
vented golf -style umbrella with a sensible
double canopy for increased wind
resistance. It also comes with a nonconductive lightweight fibreglass

shaft and ribs which is reassuring to know
if you are out in a storm in open spaces maybe on the golf course, or walking the
dog. The Fulton Storm Shield also has a
pinch-proof runner when you open and
close it, and the rubber handle is both
comfortable and easy to grip.
It comes in navy or a lighter blue and
although quite large, it is not too heavy
and I didn’t find any problem handling it,
despite the weather conditions.
Whether you are out in the rain for work
or for leisure, having the right equipment
can certainly make things a whole lot
better.
