The summer months were good for the Missouri cannabis industry, setting new record sales numbers. The DHSS reported that July’ s combined patient and adult-use cannabis sales topped $ 139 million, nearly $ 10 million more than June sales and almost $ 5 million more than the best month to date since the start of the state’ s legal sales.
Moreover, Missouri continues to outperform many states that are dealing with price reductions and declining sales. Meanwhile, Missouri cannabis businesses are performing well, experiencing three of its five highest sales months in the past six months alone.
MoCannTrade said in its August industry newsletter,“ Whether you attribute the increased sales to a 31 day, five Friday July, or to more aggressive discounting or possibly diminishing sales on the unregulated THC side, Missouri continues to show it has stamina to be a top performing market that could possibly pass $ 1 Billion in total fees generated in the coming months and nearly $ 6 Billion in total sales since the first legal sale of Marijuana back in October 2020.” Also, the World Cup could have played a role in some of the sales increase for June and July.
Here’ s a look at the last seven months of sales for combined patient and adult-use totals in Missouri( as of August 5): January – $ 125.62M February – $ 119.84M March – $ 131.09M April – $ 129.6M May – $ 135M June – $ 129.6M July – $ 139.19M
When you look a bit deeper, there’ s no doubt that July adultuse sales at $ 129.09 million far exceed patient sales of $ 10.10 million. Most suspect that many consumers who would normally obtain a state-issued patient card are simply forgoing the process and opting to purchase as adult-use consumers. Currently, there are 82,889 medical patient cardholders. That number is down from December 2022.
In December 2022, Missouri topped 208,807 active medical cannabis patients for the first time since the state began accepting medical cannabis patient applications in 2019. That number steadily declined following legalized adult-use. Medical cannabis patients continue to pay only a 4 % sales tax, lower than the tax on adult-use sales. The industry continues its push to“ Bring Back the Medical” and encourages those who qualify to obtain a state-issued patient card. Not only will patients save by paying less tax, but nearly all dispensaries also offer special pricing and other promotions for patient cardholders.
Finally, buy cannabis products only from state-licensed dispensaries. It’ s the only way to ensure you are purchasing genuine, lab-tested, cannabis safe for consumption. As always, store your cannabis products in a secure, locked space, and keep them out of the reach of children.
Enjoy the fall season and the bountiful harvest available at dispensaries near you.
