Using specialized delivery technologies, these patches allow active ingredients to penetrate the skin barrier gradually over many hours. Once absorbed, cannabinoids circulate throughout the body and may produce more systemic effects. Many cannabis transdermal patches are designed to deliver cannabinoids steadily for eight to twelve hours or longer.
This slow, controlled delivery offers several advantages. Instead of experiencing peaks and valleys in symptom relief, patients may receive a more consistent amount of medication throughout the day. For older adults who have difficulty swallowing pills, remembering multiple doses, or tolerating inhaled products, transdermal delivery can be particularly convenient. There is also minimal risk of“ green out” with THC being delivered at a slow rate.
Because transdermal patches enter the bloodstream, they should be viewed more like a medication than a topical cream. They do have a slight potential for interactions with other medications( check with your doctor first).
Potential Topical and Transdermal Patch Benefits for Older Adults
Targeted Pain Relief
● Localized joint and muscle discomfort are among the most common reasons patients seek topical cannabis products. Applying a product directly to a painful area may allow cannabinoids to interact with local receptors associated with inflammation and pain signaling. According to Dr. Ethan Russo, large joints with limited blood flow, i. e., the knees, are ideal targets for localized cannabis medicine.
Reduced Pulmonary Risk
● Since these products are applied to the skin, they eliminate concerns associated with smoking or vaping, making them appealing to individuals with respiratory conditions or those who simply prefer not to inhale cannabis.
Ease of Use
● Many seniors appreciate the simplicity of applying a cream or wearing a patch. There is no need to learn inhalation techniques, measure tincture doses multiple times per day, or wait for edible products to be digested.
Consistent Dosing
● Transdermal patches provide gradual cannabinoid release and help avoid fluctuations in symptom control that sometimes occur with other delivery methods.
Potential Skin Benefits
● Emerging research suggests that cannabinoids may support skin health through anti-inflammatory and antioxidant mechanisms. Investigators have reported promising findings in conditions such as psoriasis, eczema, itching disorders, and wound healing.
Tips for Using Topical and Transdermal Cannabis
Although topical and transdermal cannabis products are generally considered lower risk than some other forms of cannabis, older adults should still use them thoughtfully.
● As with all skin products, test a small area first to see if it causes irritation.
● Don’ t be daunted by what appears to be a high price tag— this is medicine, not a cosmetic, and high-quality topicals can last a long time. Watch for“ wellness specials”— topicals are often discounted.
● Heat helps topicals absorb into the skin more effectively. Apply them immediately after bathing or use a heating pad to warm the area.
● If you are trying a transdermal patch, check your meds for possible cannabis interactions.
● Only use high-quality products from licensed, regulated dispensaries. My favorite brands for value, absorption, and effectiveness are Amend by Sinse and Mary’ s Medicinals.
As the medical cannabis market prepares for federal rescheduling, these products represent an important expansion of cannabis-based wellness options for older adults. Topical lotions and transdermal patches can eliminate the need to smoke and may fit well into a senior’ s existing health routine. The safety, portability, and effectiveness of medical cannabis topicals make them more appropriate for various healthcare settings. Topicals also make great gifts for the older adults in your life!
