Keeping It Rolling

Missouri Microbusinesses Gain Momentum

by Samantha Blum, contributing writer

Missouri’ s microbusiness community is like a moon rock picking up speed as it rolls downhill. At first, it might not be moving quickly, but it steadily gains momentum as it rolls along. For the new microbusinesses, there have been some bumps, delays, and growing pains along the way. Still, progress is happening. Lately, it’ s easier to notice.

For a while, most talk about microbusinesses focused on waiting for state approvals. It was easy to forget that real progress was still happening. Microbusiness licensees have been waiting for state approvals to open, products, new team members, and the next round of new licensees. Even during all that waiting, these businesses kept building. They learned, produced, networked, advocated, and worked to find their place in Missouri’ s evolving legal cannabis market.
At its core, Missouri microbusinesses are small-scale, stateregulated businesses in the legal cannabis market. The microbusiness industry is built differently from large operators. But it is not outside the system. It is licensed, state-regulated, and real. These are true small businesses. They are built on a smaller scale by design, with a lot of hustle behind the scenes and a lot of heart in the work. That’ s one reason the Missouri Microbusiness Association was created.
What is the Missouri Microbusiness Association( MMBA)?
The MMBA started soon after the first round of Missouri microbusiness licenses was awarded. The MMBA helps Missouri’ s microbusiness community connect, get support, learn, and have a voice. With quarterly events, monthly webinars, shared resources, outreach, and ongoing teamwork, the association is building a stronger foundation for this segment of the industry. It’ s not about big promises. It’ s about real work, building relationships, sharing information, and making sure this segment of the industry is heard. This is important because public education remains a significant part of the process.
Many people across Missouri still do not fully understand what a microbusiness is. They may not know why the program exists or why these businesses may look different from that of larger operators. Product flow can be tighter. Menus can look different. Growth can come in waves instead of all at once. But that does not make this segment any less real. It just means there is more to explain and more to build. The MMBA continues to work educating Missourians about what a microbusiness is.

It’ s also why the MMBA is working hard on its new website. There’ s no launch date yet, but the goal is to create a central place for people to find current information and stay connected as this part of the industry grows. This is important for the microbusinesses, consumers, and Missouri as a whole. The site will feature a map of micro dispensary locations, links to educational articles and industry news, and sections featuring participant stories and motivations. The overall goal is to create awareness and an educational resource for the community.
Microbusiness Growth is Happening Right Now
To date, there are three micro-dispensaries open in Missouri: Grass Roots in Cape Girardeau, 816 Dispensary in Platte City, and Kush 21 in Poplar Bluff. For those following this journey, these businesses are a clear sign that the program is actively working, visible, and still developing.
Beyond that, the momentum keeps building. There are four to five potential dispensaries that could open in the next three to six months. More cultivators are online and producing. New products are hitting shelves. We are finally seeing more manufactured products in the micro space. These include vapes, dabs, gummies, pre-rolls, and infused pre-rolls. We’ re also seeing flower deals and loyalty programs. That may sound like a simple retail update, but it signals something bigger. The micro lane is becoming more visible, more developed, more diverse, and more alive.
There are also whispers of round three licenses to be awarded in the air. No set date has been announced yet, but this is something this market so very much needs.
So, this story is evolving. Missouri’ s microbusiness community is working, still building, and still moving forward. It might seem a bit scrappy or rough around the edges— but it’ s making progress and needs your support.
Stay tuned for next month’ s issue with more exciting microbusiness updates.
