Once I have my Goldilocks Zone dialed in , I try to get as much of my plant into the zone as possible . I do this by using small hooks made of paper clips or wire , hooking one end over a branch , and attaching the other end to the plant container ( see photo on left ). This stretches the branches out laterally and exposes the entire growth to the light . Small , insignificant side branches will now have the opportunity to become primary branches that will develop into big buds . My goal is to have a very short , very wide , bushy plant covered with buds .
As you can see by the Goliath plant ( in the photo on the previous page ), I sometimes achieve my goal . Allowing the plants to grow the way nature intended doesn ’ t achieve maximum production indoors . I prefer to use the combination of Bonsai and Topiary that I have developed .
( Above ) The five gallon disposable plastic bags used to transfer plants to from the Solo cups are inexpensive . Just roll down the sides , as you don ’ t need the full five gallons yet . Below are the six plants I started growing in the Solo cups , now growing in the plastic bags . You can buy the bag at most grow supply stores .
I start tying them down early , as you see in the photo , and continue to do so until they flower . Another way to increase production is to top the plants . You do this by removing the growing tip at the top of the main stalk . You can do this by pinching it off with your fingers or clipping it off with a pair of pruners . I accidentally found out that the easiest way is to gently push it sideways , and it will snap off cleanly ( as seen in photo above ). If I sculpt my garden properly , my entire grow canopy will be evenly covered with flowers .

After the clones have outgrown their Solo cups , I move them into fivegallon grow bags ( see photos upper right ). These bags are disposable plastic and very inexpensive . I rolled down the sides because we don ’ t need the full five gallons yet . We will increase the container size on an as needed basis . The six plants in the photo ( above in Solo cups ) are the clones six weeks after being cut .
