Missouri is taking active steps to overturn some of these convictions . Senate Bill 793 would “ automatically expunge all convictions of marijuana possession of less than 35 grams , dating to 1998 ,” The Kansas City Beacon reports . As a medical patient , Toder understands the need for cannabis reform better than most running for his position . “ I know so many people within my community who have had a positive reaction to cannabis . I know so many people who deal with depression , anxiety , stress , chronic pain , PTSD , chemotherapy , just so many things , and to see how cannabis has helped them tells me that we won ’ t be on the wrong side of history for this one . Toder ’ s views aren ’ t particularly radical . Public support for cannabis in Missouri is growing as more and more individuals are trying to break into the industry . “ Marijuana reform in Missouri has been a hotly contested topic since at least 2016 ,” The Missouri Independent reported . In 2018 , the New Approach Missouri campaign won the support of 66 % of Missouri voters to put a medical marijuana program into the state ’ s Constitution .
Once a topic shrouded in taboo and secrecy , medical cannabis is poised to go mainstream , with a little help from all of us who support or use cannabis as an alternative medicine . With emerging political champions like Spencer Toder paving the path towards progress , both patient and medical users alike will be able to inhale a little easier .
