Bill Cromwell , Publisher , Editor-in-Chief Are Indica and Sativa Terms Meaningless ?

Like you , through the articles in this magazine , I ’ m constantly learning new things about how cannabis works with our bodies and the many variations of benefits experienced by patients to combat a wide array of ailments . Publishing this magazine has been quite enlightening . For example , among the many enlightening articles within this issue is an article about how medical cannabis could aid in fighting prostate issues and cancers . I had no idea until I read Peter Kershaw ’ s article ( page 18 ).

I recently read an enlightening media release saying that a Canadian research team indicates “ Cannabis Labelling Is Misleading .” It said that rather than labeling with Indica or Sativa , labeling with the plants ’ terpene profile could better serve consumers .
The October 14 , 2021 , research news release titled , “ New study finds cannabis labeling is misleading and doesn ’ t accurately reflect a plant ’ s chemical composition .” The research team ’ s findings are described in a scientific paper published October 14 , 2021 , in Nature Plants .
Cannabis labeling is often misleading and would benefit from a more scientific approach when it comes to marketing the product , according to new research by Dalhousie University , Wageningen University & Research and Bedrocan International , a medicinal cannabis company based in the Netherlands .
The terms indica and sativa are often applied to cannabis and are widely believed to be associated with distinct aromas and psychoactive effects . By analyzing the genetic and chemical makeups of hundreds of cannabis samples , the researchers demonstrated these labels are poor predictors of a sample ’ s genetics and chemistry .

Retailers then rely on these labels to market their products , and consumers believe these labels are meaningful . But there is now broad scientific consensus that the current use of indica and sativa is misleading ,” said Dr . Sean Myles , associate professor in the Faculty of Agriculture at Dalhousie University and lead author of the study . “ These labels are simply not reliable indicators of a plant ’ s genetic or chemical composition .”
The research team also determined the creative names given to cannabis strains , like Lemon Haze and OG Kush , are poor indicators of a strain ’ s chemistry and genetics . They found pairs of strains with the same name are often just as different genetically and chemically as pairs of strains with different names .
The entire report and news release are available at www . TheEvolutionMag . com . It is an interesting report and patients could become better educated about current cannabis research underway and what to look for when purchasing products .
To learn even more about cannabis testing , understanding terpenes , and much more , see Danielle Buntyon ’ s article “ What ’ s in a Certificate of Analysis ” that examines what ’ s inside the plant in this issue on page 40 .
Leah Maurer also wrote a helpful article , “ Terpenes , How They Can Help Patients ,” in our July 2021 issue on page 20 . You can review it on our website .
When purchasing cannabis at dispensaries , it ’ s a good idea to ask budtenders about terpenes and / or cannabinoid profiles ( COA ). The more you can know about each strain you consume , the more it will help you dial in the most desired or optimal effect for you .
