until they are old enough to be independent . However , as they age and become more aware , our goal is to help them become responsible and productive members of society . Encouraging and teaching critical thinking about cannabis , how it is consumed , and what its effects are will ultimately empower children to make informed decisions based on facts and evidence .
Addressing Risks and Responsibilities
While discussing the potential benefits of cannabis is important , it ’ s equally crucial to address the associated risks and responsibilities . I suggest discussing topics such as responsible use and the potential impact on developing brains . Additionally , it is essential that we distinguish that cannabis is also medicine for those whose bodies need it . I am very fortunate to have three healthy children , so my discussions with them have always revolved around human development and teaching them that their bodies and brains are still growing . Hence , any substance , whether that be cannabis , alcohol , sugar , caffeine , nicotine , etc ., is not good for their bodies . I also taught them that there are children all over the country who are their age ( and younger ) who consume cannabis as medicine and how that has improved their health and wellness drastically . By providing balanced information , parents can help children understand the importance of making responsible choices .
Lead by Example
As a parent , leading by example is one of the most powerful ways to impart values and attitudes towards cannabis . I cannot emphasize enough the importance of modeling responsible behavior and mindset toward cannabis use . This includes demonstrating moderation , being aware of and following the law , and a commitment to health and well-being . Many of us probably have had our own experiences of behaviors modeled for us by our own parents and how that affected us as adults . There is no difference in those experiences when it comes to cannabis use , cannabis normalization , and how we handle that with our own children .
Utilize Teachable Moments
One of the best things we can do as parents is to seize opportunities for teachable moments when discussing cannabis with our children . This could include news stories , media portrayals , or conversations with peers . With the state of the current legal cannabis market in Missouri , there are plenty of parental opportunities for discussion to be brought up thanks to mainstream media outlets , billboards , or simply driving by a dispensary . By addressing these topics in real time , parents can provide context and guidance to help children navigate complex societal issues .
Navigating conversations about cannabis with children requires a thoughtful and informed approach , and we must engage in these discussions responsibly . By creating an open dialogue , promoting critical thinking , and addressing both the benefits and risks , parents can empower their children to make informed decisions about cannabis use . Ultimately , fostering a relationship built on trust and understanding is key to navigating this topic together .
