While tinctures are also considered to be a form of concentrated cannabis , they are very different than the concentrates I have covered in the past two columns ( April and May issues ). They are also consumed in a much different way . A tincture is an infused cannabis concentrate that consists of a mixture of a cannabis extract and a liquid ingestible solution ( usually ethanol alcohol or glycerin oil ). They are packaged and sold in a bottle with a dropper . They are an excellent option for medical marijuana patients who cannot inhale smoke or vapor and cannot tolerate edibles for various reasons .

Tinctures are often applied orally and under the tongue . This kind of cannabis extract is meant to be consumed orally and can be made through a process where the cannabis plant soaks in a base liquid for several days to extract the cannabinoids from the plant .
There are some misconceptions about how tinctures are categorized . People may think tinctures are edibles since they are consumed orally , but they are not . Tinctures are generally cannabis-infused alcohol or oils administered orally in small amounts using a dropper or measuring spoon . The smaller volume of product typically administered and mode of consumption differentiates tinctures from cannabis products consumed by eating or drinking .
In contrast , edibles are cannabis products that are to be consumed by humans by eating or drinking . Edibles appear and taste like commonly prepared foods consumed by eating or drinking , such as cookies , brownies , candies , or sodas . While a tincture is consumed orally like an edible , they work in very different ways . While edibles are eaten and require digestion to work , tinctures do not . Instead , tinctures are consumed sublingually , meaning they are placed under your tongue . Absorption happens much faster under the tongue than through digestion , which means that tincture will provide effects much faster .
