Top plant when it is young: cut the main top bud site off. This allows the other branches to grow into a wide bush. As that bush grows taller, you can bend, break, or tie down branches to make a wide canopy.
Hard Break
Hard Break: Different plants have differing characteristics. Some will be very bendy( flexible), while others will be snappy. Be careful!
Although the lower bud sites have been removed, I like to leave as much healthy foliage as possible!
Branches are being pulled and supported, also illustrating no bud sites beneath the canopy.
The light reaches all bud sites evenly. They are all the same height and of similar size.
What the stem looks like post-harvest: Over 495 grams of dried flower came off this plant.
Note: I never know exactly how I will trim, bend, or prune a plant until I get in there and do it. I examine the plant as a whole, spend some time with it, and let it tell me what it wants me to do. I observe how it grows naturally as well as consider its recovery and repair. I let the plant guide me in how it wants to be trimmed. This is one reason why mothers and clones are so important. If the plant you are growing is a cutting of a mother plant, all the subsequent clones will grow nearly identically, so you can form a game plan for your future grows.
The best way to explain how to make a canopy is visually. Look closely at the photos or scan the QR code to see my pruning videos. All the photos shown and my videos are from the same plant. All these methods can be used on Autoflower plants. Never let anyone tell you that it cannot be done.
Gerry Donovan( on left), the owner of Emerald Garden Grow Supply, Raytown, MO, says,“ I am not a plant Biologist nor a Chemist. I do not have any formal cannabis plant education, as that was a non-existent thing before today’ s world. I do, however, have a passion for cannabis, which words fail to describe. I’ ve traveled throughout Europe, including Amsterdam, Spain, and Canada, where I not only ventured into the world of seeds and genetics but also continued my quest to learn as much as I could about Growing the Plant, the many ways to utilize the plant, and observed the industry blossom as we know it today. I continue to expand my knowledge via grow seminars and cultivators’ conferences and, most importantly, through simple discussions with other growers. Over the last 22 years, I’ ve developed my own Grow Methodology through trial and error with love and passion. I hope to guide you on the pathway to enjoying the best cannabis you have ever consumed— your own homegrown!” Cannabis – Education – Wellness.
