Dr . Lisa Roark — A Story to Tell

The past is our teacher , the present our creation , and the future our illumination . ~ The Medicine of Crow
Part 1 of 3 by Dolores Halbin , contributing writer

Wonder Woman has her bracelets , Superman his cape , and Dr . Lisa Roark has her hippie headbands . They are her superpower . “ I never leave home without one ,” she told us , sitting on her husband ’ s lap as he blew headband feathers out of his mouth . “ The feather ones can be challenging ,” he laughed .

A Story to Tell
We turned into the Roark ( pronounced appropriately , row-ark — she is an ark ) winding drive the evening before Memorial Day of 2023 . We were greeted by their very loud pet donkey , Donkey , announcing our arrival , bringing the adorable herd of Hairy Scottish Highland cows to the fence to check us out . If you have never seen a baby Highlander , you are missing the cutest thing on earth . They should have their own YouTube comfort channel .

There is a story worth telling about those headbands and the complete transformation of the woman wearing them . Dr . Lisa Roark has earned her crow feathers . When I came home from a recent visit and started writing her story , it quickly became a two-part series . In the home stretch , it has become three . Dr . Roark has much to teach us about the past , the present , and the future . Part One is the beginning of her past .
Within minutes of saying hello , a spread of amazing food , the kind of food we simply cannot buy , appeared on the table . There was quinoa salad with watermelon and fresh mint , black bean enchiladas , and homemade guacamole , ending with smores made with those giant square marshmallows , which resulted in some sticky joints ! When the stars came out , the music started .
