THC and CBD , but What the Heck is THCv ?

I by Danielle Buntyon , contributing writer

f you ’ re savvy about THC and CBD , then THCv has likely caught your attention . Even though it ’ s not as popular or widely known as other cannabinoids , it presents some intriguing advantages worth exploring . I ’ ll outline the currently known advantages , effects , side effects , and the potential of THCv .
What is THCv ?
Tetrahydrocannabivarin ( THCv ) is a naturally occurring cannabinoid that can be extracted from the cannabis plant . While it ’ s usually present in very low concentrations , there have been documented cases of higher levels found in specific strains of marijuana . Fortunately , THCv has been approved for production and sale under the 2018 Farm Bill Act as long as it is sourced from hemp plants . THCv is not derived from THC , so it can ’ t be a tetrahydrocannabinol . THCv also isn ’ t considered cannabimimetic because it doesn ’ t perform the same functions as THC . THCv is not outlined as one of the phytocannabinoids of concern . THCv is often marketed and sold by cannabis manufacturers to retailers as a “ diet ” product .
The molecular structure of THCv is nearly identical to that of THC , apart from the difference in Carbon chain length . Instead of five Carbon atoms like its counterpart , THCv has only three — a critical distinction that grants it exclusive properties and effects when ingested .
Now , let ’ s delve into the effects THCv has on our bodies .
Effects of THCv : What does it feel like ? Compared to THC , the psychoactive effects of THCv are quite mild . However , one particularly intriguing aspect of this compound is that it reacts differently depending on its dosage amount .
Depending on the dosage , THCv has different effects : at lower doses , it can act as an appetite suppressant and does not display any psychoactive properties .
On the other hand , larger amounts of this cannabinoid will bind with your CB1 receptor , which may induce a euphoric feeling while inspiring hunger . This is particularly true for those who have developed immunity to various cannabinoids over time .
So , depending on your intake — THCv can suppress or stimulate your desire for food !
Compared to THC , the effects of THCv are believed to be short-lived and swift , which suggests that you would feel the impacts of THCv more quickly than with ordinary THC , yet they won ’ t last nearly as long .
Benefits of THCv
Engaging with the endocannabinoid system , THCv has been proven to reduce stress and anxiety . Thus , making it a fitting selection for those who experience mental health conditions like anxiety disorders .
● Appetite Suppressant ― Boasting a renowned result , THCv can suppress hunger when consumed in moderate doses .
● Anti-inflammatory Properties ― Not only is THCv renowned for its ability to reduce pain and inflammation , but it can also help the body fend off damaging inflammatory responses .
● Anti-Anxiety Properties ― THCv has shown to be beneficial in reducing anxiety attacks in PTSD patients without suppressing emotion , making it an invaluable remedy for individuals with anxiety disorder symptoms .
● Bone-strengthening Benefits ― For people who experience degenerative bone disorder conditions such as arthritis and fibromyalgia , this makes it a great go-to choice — currently being studied for osteoporosis .
● Maintains Sugar Levels ― THCv can be a pivotal ingredient in controlling and maintaining optimal blood sugar levels , offering those diagnosed with diabetes an encouraging avenue of treatment . THCv research shows promise in its ability to regulate blood sugar levels and reduce insulin resistance .
● Anticonvulsant effects ― The potential of THCv as an anticonvulsant is becoming increasingly clear , making it a promising therapeutic option for those with seizure disorders .
Extraction Process
Even though THCv is often not present in sufficient amounts to be extracted easily from cannabis plants , Delta-9 THC , CBD or other abundant cannabinoids can still be converted into it with a commonly used process . This conversion does not introduce any impurities into the final extract .
THCv is found to be most abundant in Sativas , particularly — strains with African genetics . Durban Poison is one of the more common high-THCv strains , but other options can be found in the strain list below .
These are a few top-notch options for those looking for an extra kick of THCv . ( Note : The stains mentioned here may not be available in Missouri under the same names . Ask your budtender for comparable strains / names .)
