The health of tens of millions of Americans is severely compromised to a place where they legitimately need an immediate jump start . As just one example , there ’ s insomnia , of which more than one in four Americans suffer from . Insomnia can start a chain reaction spiraling downward into other more serious physical and psychological problems . As this author has written in this publication previously ( see the June 2020 issue ), cannabis has become , for millions of Americans , their go-to sleep aid . Often directly related to insomnia is chronic pain , which frequently prevents sound sleep . The national epidemic of chronic pain is what provided a window of opportunity for a corrupt and predatory pharmaceutical company that resulted in the opioid epidemic . Unlike opioids , cannabis is a safe and effective non-addicting method for treating chronic pain .
Unfortunately , there are those who come to be dependent long-term on cannabis . Granted , there are exceptional cases that may necessitate daily long-term cannabis consumption ( even several times a day ), such as chronic unrelenting pain due to a severe injury . Wherever possible , though , the goal should be getting to that place of homeostasis in rebuilding a fully functional endocannabinoid system that obviates the need for supplementation . As one regains their physical and emotional health , they can and should cut back to an as-needed basis . Periodic and moderate cannabis use and viewing cannabis as a supplement in times of need can serve us well in maintaining body and mind homeostasis .
