Pinene
Pinene is another naturally abundant terpene . There are two forms of pinene : alpha-pinene and beta-pinene . Pinene provides the fresh , bright scent of many plants , including pine needles , rosemary , and basil .
Linalool
Linalool is most abundant in the lavender plant and gives the flower its rich scent . Linalool is generally considered one of the more important compounds in aromatherapy and is responsible for the calming effect many people get when smelling lavender or its essential oil .
Myrcene
Myrcene is a terpene commonly found in the cannabis plant and plants such as hops , lemongrass , and thyme .
Beta-caryophyllene
Beta-caryophyllene exists in many herbs and vegetables , such as cloves and black pepper . Caryophyllene smells of woodlands , spicy pepper , and cloves .
Humulene
Humulene is a key component of the hop plant . Other plants , such as clove and ginger , also contain it .
When purchasing cannabis flower in dispensaries , it is always good to ask budtenders if it has a terpene and / or cannabinoid profile they can share . Not all testing labs or cultivators will provide them , but some will . The more you can know as a consumer about each particular strain you consume will help you dial in the “ sweet spot ” for your particular endocannabinoid system and thus find the most desired or optimal effect on your body .
As more research by the scientific community is allowed ( once cannabis is federally legalized and no longer a Schedule-1 controlled substance ), we will be able to know more about strains of cannabis and their ( general ) effects on people . Still , for now , there will always be a little self-experimentation that needs to be done . Enjoy your terpene journey !
Happy New Year , and we ’ ll see you next month .
