Cannabis and Couples Therapy
How The Two Can Work Together ! by Tara Holm , contributing writer
An emerging trend is starting — Cannabis and Couples Therapy , an alternative method for deepening connections and helping resolve conflicts . Integration of cannabis into couples therapy sessions can offer a unique pathway to reconnect intimacy and communication .
Alternative therapies are playing a huge role in mental health these days . Today , it is common to hear about “ Plant Medicine ” and “ Ketamine ” therapies used to help balance our brain chemistries to help release past traumas and toxic patterns . Over the past three years , cannabis has had several evolutions , with research and clinical observations recognizing the benefits of cannabis in several areas . Some of those areas include sleep improvement , pain management , appetite stimulation , nausea reduction , and mental health support . With the newfound acceptance of cannabis in social and professional settings , we , as partakers , should stay informed about rules , regulations , and the latest scientific findings . It is up to us to do our own research on the latest studies and products .
Ongoing research continues to explore cannabis in wellness to help understand its benefits and risks . Therefore , cannabis should be approached cautiously , taking into consideration each individual ’ s health conditions and consulting healthcare professionals .
One significant impact cannabis has on human bodies is emotions and relaxation . The Endocannabinoid System ( ECS ) is equipped to work with the brain and body receptors to help regulate mood and stress , leading to reduced cortisol levels , muscle relaxation , and enhanced mindfulness . The release of dopamine and serotonin is associated with joy , calmness , and contentment . Emotional processing and letting your guard down can improve communication with the help of cannabis . On the flip side , too much THC can lead to increased anxiety or panic attacks and may lead to dependence if used as the sole coping mechanism . Everyone ’ s body breaks down THC and CBD differently .

Now , Let ’ s Talk Therapy !
Therapy can be a great tool to help with communication in any relationship and overall mental health . However , choosing a therapist can be challenging . You want to feel safe and comfortable , and that goes for both people participating . Therapy can benefit at any stage of a relationship , whether it be to enhance communication or deepen connections . Effectively communicating with one another is a primary goal of any relationship . Expressing emotions , being clear on your intentions , and being fully authentic will help add to the deeper connection of the relationship . Therapy is also an aid to improve conflict resolution skills so that when a problem does arise , you ’ ll both have the tools to navigate through it and find solutions that benefit both partners .
Strengthening Emotional Intimacy
Reconnecting emotionally presents another barrier in relationships . Learning and exploring past traumas and unmet needs is another layer to process together to strengthen a healthy relationship , which is yet another reason a therapist can help effectively navigate relationships on neutral grounds .
Fostering Growth and Preventing Future Problems
Therapy is not only used for current situations — it is also preventive medicine , addressing issues before they escalate . It helps equip us with tools to handle challenges calmly in any relationship when they arise . Having a safe , non-judgmental space to explore sensitive topics and navigate challenges with compassion and intention is top-tier !
Getting recommendations from others and phone interviews will help you choose the right therapist for you and your partner . In couples therapy , cannabis can potentially help partners feel more relaxed and open and diminish anxiety . However , its use should be mindful , intentional , and guided by a professional .
My personal experience in couples counseling is with Jill Simpson , a marriage or relationship counselor located in Liberty , MO . She gave me many great tools to use in every relationship !
With the right tools and knowledge , we can all better ourselves and sometimes help others . Navigating what works for you and your partner can be difficult at times , but with all the resources available , we can all put our best effort forward !
All relationships and friendships deserve our best selves to show up !
