great alternative to inhaled methods and usually mirror inhaled methods in how long they last .
● While the effects of edibles can last six to eight hours , sublinguals tend only to affect the consumer for two to three hours . This makes them an excellent choice for patients who don ’ t want to feel the effects all day .
● To consume a tincture , simply squeeze a few drops from the dropper and hold them under your tongue for around 90 seconds . Make sure to follow the product ’ s dosing information , and always start small if you are new to the product .
● The hardest part is actually keeping the tincture ( or any other sublingual ) under your tongue and not swallowing it by reflex . If you do swallow it — no worries , but it may act more like a traditional edible since it will need to be processed through the digestive system before it begins to work .
Topicals
Another product worth trying if you cannot eat or inhale cannabis products is a cannabis topical . For new consumers , topicals are a great way to get an effect from a cannabis product without any ingestion or smoking at all .
● Topicals typically come in the form of oils , roll-ons , lotions , balms , ointments , and creams .
● Topicals are only useful for chronic pain in isolated areas of the body . So , conditions like arthritis , back and neck pain , or other muscle or joint pains are ideal for treatment with topicals . Even if a topical contains active THC , it still won ’ t induce that “ high ” you would get from smoking or ingesting cannabis .
● With most topicals , cannabinoids can ’ t breach the bloodstream and only penetrate for localized relief .
However , a subset of topical products called Transdermals DO penetrate the bloodstream and offer all-over relief , rather than just in one particular area .
● These products are almost always in the form of a transdermal patch that can be placed on various areas of the body .
● Then , the patch gradually releases the cannabis into the body over a period of time , thus allowing the cannabinoids to go to work entering the bloodstream for an effective and long-lasting response .
● Patches can offer all day or night relief , with a slow release of the chosen cannabinoid throughout their period of use .
● For some , this is an appealing alternative to smoking , vaporizing , or ingesting , which delivers effects that subside relatively quickly . In addition , a transdermal patch can be adhered out of sight and on a discrete area of the body , allowing for medical use anywhere , anytime .
While it is difficult to do , MMJ home growers can use their cannabis flower to create each of the products mentioned , or they can be purchased at a dispensary near you . If a patient is unable to ingest , smoke , or vape cannabis , these are all great methods to try that will allow relief from using medicinal cannabis .
