While recently touring Nodaway Holdings , a cannabis manufacturing company in Humansville , MO , which manufactures Plume and Lake Water brand products , I saw someone working on a machine I ’ d never seen before .
I asked Michael Roe , general manager of manufacturing at Nodaway Holdings , what that machine is and what it does .
“ The emulsifying agent is also known as intermediate or interphase . The term “ nanoemulsion ” also refers to a miniemulsion , which is fine oil / water or water / oil dispersion stabilized by an interfacial film of surfactant molecule having a droplet size range of 20 – 600 nm ( a nanometer ‘ nm ’ is a unit of measurement equal to one billionth of a meter ). Because of the small size , nanoemulsions are transparent .”

Ultrasonics for cannabis extracts ( THC ) are hydrophobic water-soluble molecules . To overcome the immiscibility of cannabinoids infusing edibles , beverages , creams , and other infused products , a proper method of emulsification is needed . Ultrasonic processors have been used in pharmaceutical industries to make stable emulsions for over half a century .
Roe says , “ Todd Brock , shown above working on our Ultrasonic Emulsification machine , was my first hire at the manufacturing facility , and I trained him to work in the edible department . Ultrasonic Emulsification is the process of combining two immiscible substances , typically oil and water , to create a stable mixture known as an Emulsion .”
Roe explains , “ Sonication refers to the process of applying sound energy to agitate particles or discontinuous fibers in a liquid . Ultrasonic frequencies are used , so the process is also known as ultrasonication . Sonication is conducted using an ultrasonic probe ( sonicator ).
Through the powerful forces created by ultrasonic cavitation , sonicators ( ultrasonic emulsification machines ) can achieve nanoparticle sizes that other emulsification technology cannot . With sufficient processing , particle sizes under 100 nm are often achievable . What smaller particle size means for cannabis-infused products :
● More translucency — clearer , less cloudy appearance
● Increased bioavailability — better absorption
● More accurate dosing — more uniform concentrations
