milliliters of Ever-Clear 190-proof grain alcohol . I assume you will need to go to the liquor store to buy this item , but if you already have it , I want to party with you . You will also need some Pyrex glassware . I like using the 13 x 9-inch casserole dish and four large measuring cups . I also utilize the smaller measuring cup that holds two cups . Throw in a couple of kitchen strainers , a piece of cheesecloth , and a Rubber-Maid or Tupperware container with a sealable lid , and we have everything needed . Well , almost everything . You also need some weed . An ounce or so of trim or popcorn buds will be plenty .
The first step in preparation is to use a strainer , grinder , or your fingers to break your marijuana up into pieces . You don ’ t want to make it too fine because we will be filtering it out , and we don ’ t want it so powdery that it goes through the cheesecloth filter . Conversely , you want the buds to be broken up enough so that we can get to the hash inside . If you use trim , you won ’ t need to break it up , as it is already shake . The more potent your marijuana is , the better your hash will be . The strain I used is from a company called 2020 Mendocino and is called MMXX . It is very frosty and extremely strong , so I got an excellent yield of final product . Smoking this stuff will definitely lower your test scores .
Now that you have the marijuana broken into pieces put a handful into the plastic container . The amount depends on the size of your container . Leave plenty of room so you can completely cover the weed with alcohol and still have the Tupperware only about half full . This is so we can shake it up and dissolve our THC-rich kief and rosin into the alcohol . Make sure your lid is sealed tightly , and when the Ever-Clear fumes start to make the lid swell , open the edge to burp off the gases , or the lid will pop off , make a mess , and waste product . Both are bad , so pay attention to what you are doing . You can find a full demonstration of this process , along with a lot of other cool stuff , on my YouTube channel , Bobo ’ s Botanicals .
After that is finished , we simply pour the mixture through our large strainer so that the liquid goes into our large measuring cup and the weed stays in the strainer . Squeeze ( or press ) as much alcohol out as you can , while being careful to keep the sediment out of the liquid . Now pour the mix into our next cup and let it pass through a smaller strainer with finer mesh . The final process is to put it through the cheesecloth to catch smaller pot debris and then pour the alcohol into the casserole dish . Repeat the process until the bottle of Ever-Clear is empty . Discard the used marijuana because , at this point , its only useful purpose would be as mulch .
At this point , our sediment-free liquid is now bright green ( photo top left ), loaded with THC , located in our 13 x 9-inch casserole dish , and ready for the final process . 1 . Put the glassware in a well-ventilated area , preferably with an exhaust fan nearby .
2 . Place a regular household fan so that it is pointed at an angle and blows directly into the pan . This will speed up the evaporation , which should take around 24 hours to complete .
3 . After all the alcohol has dissipated , you will have a yellowish , brownish substance that is crusty in some spots and sticky in others ( photo lower-upper left ). The yellow part is kief , and the rest is rosin .
4 . Now take a clean razor blade ( photo upper right ) or a new paint scraper to scrape your hash out of the pan . I purchased a cheap scraper only to be used when making hash .
5 . Lastly , you can roll it into balls or use a mold like I did using a silicone dab container . Just smash it together and make whatever shape you like .
You can now smoke it in a regular pipe or bong , or if you prefer , you can use it to make edibles . If you smoke it , use a steel screen because the hash will burn a hole in a brass one . When making edibles , decarb the hash just as you would cannabis flower . Heat it in the oven for 27 minutes at 252 degrees , then make the edible just as you would with flower . Make sure to adjust your dosages because the hash is far more potent than typical weed .
As I mentioned , you can check out a full demo on my YouTube channel . You will find a link at the end of the article . I hope you enjoy your hash and the rest of the summer . See you next month with more fun projects and tips .
