Cannabis as a Trail Companion
Cannabis is part of the vibe, though it’ s never a requirement. Strautkalns typically enjoys a pre-roll before hitting the trail— recently, she’ s been partial to Cheetah Piss and Grape Jelly rolls, with Wynk seltzers as a lighter option. Some members take their first dab ever on a club outing. Others don’ t consume at all and come purely for the hike and the company.
The pairing of cannabis and outdoor movement isn’ t just anecdotal good times. Research is beginning to catch up to what enthusiasts have long suspected. Studies on CBD and CBG suggest both compounds have pro-healing and anti-inflammatory properties— a potential benefit after long days on the trail. Myrcene-dominant strains, like Jungle Cookies and Hash Burgers, are popular for their relaxing, body-focused effects, which may ease muscle tension without dulling focus.
As Strautkalns puts it, the combination of endorphins, dopamine, and serotonin from exercise, community, and cannabis shifts your focus away from the more challenging aspects of hiking. Suddenly, a steep incline becomes background noise to a meaningful conversation or a good laugh.
The Science of Showing Up Together

if you’ re consuming, as cannabis can mask thirst. Wear sturdy shoes, bring snacks, and carry any medications you might need. Always wear tick repellent and check for ticks after every outing.
Most importantly, hike with others. Look for meetups in your area, try a few different groups, and don’ t be discouraged if the first one isn’ t your fit. If nothing clicks— well, you could always start your own.
If you want to meet up for a hike with the Fat Stoner Babes Hiking Club, check its website or Instagram for the hike schedule. Though it began its spring season in mid-March, you can join any time. There will be an informational meeting about the annual campout this month on April 26.

The benefits Strautkalns has observed in her hiking club mirror researchers findings in formal studies. A 2024 qualitative study of adults in their 60s and 70s participating in a group hiking program found that participants reported overwhelmingly positive experiences: improved fitness, better mood from being outdoors, and a meaningful sense of connection to their fellow hikers. The researchers concluded that group and nature-based experiences drive accountability and enjoyment in ways that solo exercise simply can’ t replicate.
A separate 24-week randomized clinical trial out of Brazil— involving 96 participants— found that regular hiking led to significant improvements in balance, quality of life, social connection, and lower systolic blood pressure. For a population with low participation rates in physical activity, the researchers noted that hiking programs may be among the most effective and accessible tools available.
Hit the Trail: Tips for Getting Started
Strautkalns has simple advice for anyone curious about combining hiking and cannabis— or just hiking, full stop. Start low and go slow with both exertion and THC. Get cleared by your healthcare provider before beginning any new exercise routine, and start on shorter, easier trails before building up. Stay hydrated— especially
