Growing the Missouri Way

The Rise of Flora Farms by Matthan Black, contributing writer

In a world filled with international conglomerates and multistate operators, it’ s difficult for a single-state, Missouri-based company to gain traction in an oversaturated market. But that’ s exactly what happened to Flora Farms.

What started as three small dispensaries and a 30,000 sq. ft. cultivation facility in southwest Missouri has now grown into a company with 12 dispensaries across the state, a full-scale manufacturing facility featuring three popular brands, and the largest cultivation facility in Missouri featuring 90,000 square feet of flowering canopy, a state-of-the-art genetics lab, and a staff of over 250 people; 500 in the whole company. In June of 2025, Flora Farms acquired the most recent of its dispensaries by agreeing to manage the four Greenlight stores in St. Louis. Located in Chippewa, Rock Hill, Berkeley, and Ferguson, these four stores have been a successful part of their communities and the Missouri cannabis industry since the very beginning.
I was thrilled to hear Flora Farms was acquiring these stores. Its been serving these stores as a wholesale brand for years, so it has first-hand knowledge of how successful they can be. That’ s in no small part due to the leadership and effort of the Greenlight organization. You couldn’ t ask for a better partner. The Greenlight stores and brand have been a huge part of Missouri’ s success in the cannabis market. With stores in every corner of the state, the brand is recognized as trustworthy and solid thanks to its wide selection, customer engagement, and beautiful design aesthetic. Pair that with stellar product offerings under the Greenlight and Core brands, and you’ ve got a recipe for success.
Any store acquisition can be a difficult process. The new management group must evaluate operations while introducing the staff to the new company culture. This can be a scary time for everyone, but it helps to have a steady hand at the wheel. Long-time Flora Farms Retail Director Mary Kate Black and her team were prepared.“ This is one of the most important things we do,” says Black.“ Each time we acquire a new store, we learn a lot. That experience has helped us improve at doing these things as effectively as possible, which is important because there are a lot of moving parts. You have to get to know the staff while helping them deal with the changes. It’ s a real opportunity to teach and to learn. We’ ve been doing that with the Greenlight stores, and we’ re not done yet.”
The St. Louis stores are set to rebrand as Flora Farms dispensaries in April 2026.“ We’ ve learned a lot from the Greenlight teams,” says Mark Hendren, president of Flora Farms.“ And we’ re excited to bring our unique brand of customer service, value-oriented products, and integrity to the St. Louis market. As the cannabis market continues to consolidate and multi-state operators gain a greater presence here, it’ s important for people to be able to walk into a dispensary, feel at home,

and know they’ ll be treated well. That’ s not always the case, and we’ re going to do our best to make sure that Flora Farms is known for its quality customer service.” That starts with making sure everyone gets a great deal.
If Flora Farms’ retail division is obsessed with customer service, then its wholesale cultivation and manufacturing products are obsessed with value. Value shouldn’ t be a dirty word in our industry. Everyone seems to think that value and cheap are the same thing. It’ s been our mission to prove that doesn’ t have to be true. You can make the same amount of money selling Timex watches or Rolex watches. The only difference is how many people you get to help. And Flora Farms wants to help as many people as possible. In an industry obsessed with connoisseur-quality products, it’ s easy to forget about the people who just want a good product at a fair price. Those are the people Flora Farms wants to help. It owes a lot to the 1 % of cannabis enthusiasts; they’ ve helped push Flora Farms to grow the best weed it can. But it’ s the soccer moms, kindergarten teachers, and farmers that taught us the value of a dollar. Through lean financial controls and innovative production scaling, Flora Farms continues to increase the quality of its products while keeping costs down for the consumers. This recipe has helped it get to where it is today, and it doesn’ t seem to be slowing down.
If you’ re in the St. Louis area, please stop by any of these newly branded Flora Farms dispensaries and see for yourself. You just may have found your new favorite dispensary.
