The European Schools Newspaper, Issue No 4, 47th Primary School of Piraeus ‘Patmos’ by Rigas Kapodistrias My favourite place to be is the island of Patmos which is in the Dodecanese complex. Most people visit Patmos to see the Monastery of Saint John and the Cave of the Apocalypse both declared World Heritage Sites by UNESCO. I visit the island every summer with my mum and my brother. My dad can’t come because he has to work. It is my favourite island because my grandparents, uncles, aunts and numerous cousins stay there. Aspri, Agrolivado and Meloi are some of the best beaches for a swim. I love Patmos (LFE!). It is a very, very good place for me! ‘Lefkada!!’ by Eleanna Koka Lefkada is an island in the Ionian Sea which is connected to the mainland through a causeway. It is the most mountainous of the Ionian islands with the tallest summit of the mountain Elati at 1,158m. The plain spreads cover 27% of the island and there are no rivers in it. The best time to visit Lefkada is in the summer. It is a beautiful island with spectacular beaches eg. the world famous Porto Katsiki, the cosmopolitan Nydri and Vasiliki, the windsurfing centre. I love this place! ‘A trip to Salamis island’ by Kathrin Aga, Erica Balo & Christofer Agas Salamina or Salamis island is a really nice place. It is very close to Piraeus and we can get there via the ferry. It is a good idea for the weekend so there are several shops, cafes, restaurants as well as sports centres. The best beach for a swim is Psili Ammos and Skytali is good for fishing. However, Salamina is known for the Battle of Salamis in 480 B.C. against the Persians, its old churches and monasteries and the Naval base which is a major base for the Hellenic Navy. Salamina sounds like a very interesting place to visit! 3
