CATHEDRALS
In Salamanca there are two
cathedrals: the Old Cathedral (on
the left images) and the New one
(on the right images) The new
cathedral was constructed
keeping the old one – a wall of the
new cathedral leans on the North
wall of the old one.
Among the ornate carvings on the
façade is an astronaut floating in
space and a faun having an icecream, contemporary symbols of
the 20th century.
THE GARDEN OF
CALIXTO AND MELIBEA
The story of this garden is related
to a book called ‘La Celestina’ by
Fernando de Rojas, who wrote it
while living in Salamanca.
Calixto, a young nobleman, falls in
love with Melibea but she rejects
him. Calixto asks the evil Celestine
for help. Celestine called the devil
to bewitch Melibea and makes her
fall in love with Calixto. How the
story ends I’m not going to tell
you but it is thought the story
developed in this garden.
THE ROMAN BRIDGE
The Roman bridge has 26 arches
through which the River Tormes
runs. On one side of the bridge
there is a male pig without head
and the statue of Lázaro de
Tormes and the blind man. Until
the 20th century it was the only
bridge over the River Tormes.
