Mikrolimano belongs to the district
of Castella and was used as a war port
in ancient times. These days, it is one of
the finest points of Piraeus with
amphitheatrically built homes, swaying
yachts, fishing boats and numerous
dining and entertainment options all
reminding of summer island living.
The coastal area of Neo Faliro has been upgraded and is also prominent due to the Peace and
Friendship stadium and the Karaiskakis stadium lying opposite one another. Both stadiums are
an integral part of the Greek athletic tradition.
Inaugurated in 1985, the Peace and
Friendship stadium (SEF) bears similarities to
the ’Arena of Milan’ and the ‘Palais of
Budapest’. It has hosted major world sporting
events and is the home court for the
Olympiacos Basketball Club.

The Georgios Karaiskakis Stadium was
built in 1859 and was used in the 1896
Athens Olympic Games.
Its football use began in the 1920s and
it was named in memoriam of Chief General
Georgios Karaiskakis who was killed in Neo
Faliro during the Greek Revolution. This
football-only stadium is the home for the
Olympiacos Football Club.

Landmarks
The Municipal Theatre in downtown Piraeus
was founded in 1884 and remains an impressive
neo-classical building. Its construction took 10
years and it is considered one of the most
important theatres in the country. Its internal
layout followed the ‘Theatre d’Odeon’ of Paris.
Located across from the Neo-Byzantine
Piraeus cathedral of St. Constadinos and Eleni,
it forms one of the most renowned landmarks
of the city and a popular meeting place.
