2-Ethylhexanol is a colorless, combustible liquid that is poorly soluble in water but soluble in
most organic solvents. It is produced by a three-step process involving the aldol selfcondensation of n-butyraldehyde followed by dehydration and hydrogenation. N-butyraldehyde
itself is produced by the catalytic hydroformylation of propylene with synthesis gas. It is an
important feed stock used to manufacture various chemicals that further serve diverse industries
that include automotive, paints, building & construction, and various other manufacturing
industries.
The European region is an uncertain market due to currency fluctuations; where the availability
from the supplier’s side has improved, global economic uncertainty, along with tighter lending
and inflation-curbing measures, have limited export activity. The market has stabilized as
summer downstream shutdowns and slow consumption have improved the stability of spot
businesses. Looking forward, an anticipated improvement in supplies and better markets for poly
vinyl chloride (PVC) and paints resulting from a recovering economy are expected to keep 2ethylhexanol prices steady to higher through late 2014.
2-ethylhexyl (EH) acrylate is majorly used as a reactive building block to produce polymer
coatings, adhesives, and sealants. As per the applications of 2-EH acrylates, the construction
industry is a major factor driving the demand for this chemical in the region.
