General Idea’s early projects mimicked popular culture formats, such as beauty
pageants and picture magazines, in order to forward a critical and satirical view of art,
culture, and media. In 1987 the group turned their attention to the AIDS crisis, using
strategies developed over the previous eighteen years to new ends.
