Essential Gardening For August Flowers/Plants Greenhouse Buddleias, Weigela, Penstemon, Berberis and many evergreens will root easily this month – Make stem cuttings (ideally pencil thickness) and about 7-10cm in length. Clip back faded blooms of lavender to ensure that the plants stay nice and bushy. Remove lower leaves from the cutting and insert into compost mixed 50/50 with sharp sand. Cuttings can be placed in an unheated propagator or you could use a clear plastic food container such as an old strawberry punnet as a cover instead. Fruit/Vegetables Sow Brussel Sprouts now, ready for next year and keep sowing salad stuff such as rocket and lettuce at fortnightly intervals. To advertise in (You can use the clippings in a pretty bowl as an air freshener or you can dry them and store them in your airing cupboard/wardrobe to help keep moths away) General If you’re visiting the beach this summer why not collect some pretty shells, pebbles, sea washed glass and /or driftwood to decorate the garden? Many of us now have areas of stone in the garden and these would all add to the interest, particularly if you have grasses planted either in the ground or in pots. Please call 01925 766742 55
