Essential Feature NCO Parr Hall concert Top oboist, Nicholas Daniel, joins the NCO for the first concert of its new Warrington and Halton season on 30 October at Parr Hall The Northern Chamber Orchestra (NCO) will be joined by international oboist, Nicholas Daniel, for the first concert of its new Warrington and Halton season, at Parr Hall on Thursday 30 October, 7.30pm. Nicholas has performed as a soloist all over the world, to critical acclaim, and while he has given several well-received performances with the NCO in Macclesfield, this is the first time he has joined the orchestra at Parr Hall - making this a treat for Warrington audiences. Nicholas Daniel’s long and distinguished career began when, at the age of 18, he won the BBC Young Musician of the Year Competition and he went on to win further competitions in Europe. As one of the UK’s most distinguished soloists, as well as a highly-successful conductor, he has become an important ambassador for music and musicians in many different fields. In recognition of this, he was recently awarded the prestigious Queen’s Medal for Music. For the Northern Chamber Orchestra’s Baroque and Beyond concert at Parr Hall on Thursday 30 October, Nicholas will be performing Vaughan Williams’ gorgeously mellow masterpiece, the Oboe Concerto, which demands virtuosic agility from the soloist and string players. The concert also features Bach’s famous Concerto for Violin and Oboe, A.K.A. the ‘Double Concerto’, which has everything echo effects, a surging opening movement, radiant melodies, plus a hint of surprise! 48 Purcell provides another Baroque ‘wonderwork’ with his lively Abdelazar Suite (originally incidental music, written for a play) that captures Restoration England. Pachelbel’s Canon, which needs no introduction, is included, along with the sprightly Fugue. The concert moves through the musical eras with Mendelssohn’s melodious String Symphony no 10, excerpts from Walton’s uplifting Henry V (written for the legendary 1944 Lawrence Olivier film and widely considered to be the composer’s best cinematic score) and contemporary composer, Arthur Butterworth’s beautifully personal Elegy for Diana, premiered by NCO in April 2014 and getting only its second ever performance for this concert at Parr Hall. The NCO concert series is supported by public funding by the National Lottery through Arts Council England and brings superb quality classical music to Warrington and Halton audiences, from one of the country’s finest chamber orchestras. Jonathan Thackeray, NCO General Manager said: “We are really looking forward to presenting the Baroque and Beyond concert at Parr Hall in October. We always enjoy working with top oboist, Nicholas Daniel, and we can’t wait for Warrington audiences to have the opportunity to hear him perform Vaughan Williams’ masterpiece. With Baroque classics, a piece written for a Restoration play, a classic 20th century film score and only the second performance ever of a contemporary work by a living British composer, it’s a wonderful programme with something for everyone!” Tickets for the Baroque and Beyond concert at Parr Hall on Thursday 30 October are available from the Parr Hall & Pyramid Box Office: 01925 442345 (open Monday Friday 9am - 5pm, Saturdays 10am - 2pm), online at www.pyramidparrhall.com and ON THE DOOR.
